Baseball and Softball Swept on Road Trip
It was a tough work day for the ACC baseball and softball squads as they spent over 16 hours on the road and field and came up short, losing in doubleheaders at Bay College in Escanaba.
The softball team fell 10-6 and 5-2, while baseball lost 10-5 and 5-4.
In the softball opener, the Lumberjacks trailed 5-4 before a five-run fifth inning by the Norse put things out of reach. Kenna Tippman, Olivia Leland and Abigail Platt all had two hits for the Jacks. Alaina Saari had two RBI. Saari and Leland each doubled.
The nightcap was another heartbreaker as one swing of the bat made the difference with Bay launching a three-run home run in the bottom of the 6th to pull ahead.
ACC had led 1-0 until the 4th when the Norse scored to tie. After Bay scored in the bottom of the fifth for a 2-1 lead, the Lumberjacks scored one to tie it back up 2-2.
Shae Lampinen had two hits. Macy Schram and Tippman each doubled for the Jacks.
Taylor Krentz pitched both games for ACC.
The results were similar on the baseball side as in game one, a close game got away. The Lumberjacks took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the fifth and were tied headed into the 6th, but the Norse scored five times to take the win.
Brett Moroschan and Evan Fairbanks each had two hits. Fairbanks doubled and Moroschan drove in two runs. Grant Slater struck out six in five innings on the mound.
Game two was another nail-biter as again the fifth inning was the unlucky one for ACC as after leading 4-3, they yielded two runs to lose the game.
Matt Thompson had two doubles and two RBI. Evan Fairbanks hit a two-run home run. Luke Gifford struck out seven in three innings, Wyatt Crawford whiffed three in two innings of work and Brendan DiBartolomeo threw a shutout inning.
Both ACC softball (3-22 overall, 1-15 conference) and baseball (10-24-1 overall, 3-13 conference) close out the season this weekend at home against Muskegon Community College.
