Baseball Sweeps All-Star Team
The Alpena Community College baseball team hosted Team Elite Midwest, a high school all-star travel team consisting of players from the Detroit, Grand Rapids and Flint areas, and came away with three wins.
ACC swept Elite, winning 9-8 and 13-4 on Saturday and 6-4 on Sunday.
Maxwell McCarty went 6 for 10 at the plate, scored three runs, drove in four and stole three bases from his leadoff spot.
Jonny Rensberry had four hits, scored three runs and knocked in four. Jake Zann had three hits, three runs and two RBI.
Anthony Filippis was 3 for 5, scored four times and stole three bases.
Kaleb Donajkowski doubled and tripled and had two RBI.
Defensively, Aiden Bishop was outstanding in the infield all weekend long, McCarty played a solid centerfield and Rensberry starred behind the plate.
On the mound, Lane Gross threw 1.2 innings of shutout baseball, striking out three. Tristan Simrau also pitched a perfect inning of relief, striking out one.
Zann struck out three in 3.1 innings and gave up only one hit and an unearned run. Ethan Bergstein pitched a one-two-three inning, with a strikeout.
On Sunday, Caleb McEwen started and gave up one run in 3.2 innings. Evan Fairbanks threw a shutout inning.
The Lumberjacks are now 5-2 in fall play. They play at Siena Heights next Friday and at Aquinas on Sunday.
