Baseball Opens Weekend With a Sweep
Alpena Community College stayed hot in MCCAA Northern Conference baseball with a sweep of Muskegon Community College Friday, defeating the Jayhawks 5-1 and 4-2.
The Lumberjacks' pitching was dominant as Max Coughlin (7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO) and Grant Slater (6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 SO) earned big wins as starting pitchers. Lane Gross came on in relief in game two and struck out two in one inning.
Muskegon led 1-0 in the opener until the top of the fourth when Evan Fairbanks doubled, moved up on a fly out by Brett Moroschan and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nate Koster.
The Lumberjacks then broke the game open in the fifth, scoring three runs with the key hit being a two-run single by Jonny Rensberry. Fairbanks had three hits in the game.
In game two, the Jacks led off the scoring in the second on an Aiden Bishop RBI single. Kaden Benaske had a two-run single in the third to give ACC a 3-0 lead.
Jake Zann then drove in Bishop with an RBI single in the sixth inning to put the Lumberjacks up 4-0.
All of ACC's runs scored with two outs. The sixth inning rally happened entirely with two outs.
At the plate, the Lumberjacks spread the wealth as five different players had hits in game one and eight did in game two.
Maxwell McCarty, Benaske, Bishop and Fairbanks all had hits in both contests.
Tomorrow ACC, now 9-18 overall and 5-4 conference, plays again at Muskegon before wrapping up the weekend at Grand Rapids CC on Sunday.
