ACC Gets First Win of Season
ACC men's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2024-25 season in impressive fashion, defeating Minnesota North College-Hibbing, 100-80.
The Lumberjacks trailed by as many as nine in the first half and the Cardinals led, 48-42 at the break. After an opening basket by Hibbing, ACC outscored their opponents, 58-30 the rest of the way.
A 14-4 run gave the Jacks their first lead of the second half at 56-54 on a Keyondre Gamez layup. Moments later, with 15:52 left in the game, a tip-in by ACC's Nick Fileccia gave the Lumberjacks a 58-56 lead they would never relinquish.
The lead expanded, but the Cardinals hung in, trailing by only six at 79-73 with 6:59 to go, but a 15-3 run by ACC over the next four minutes put the game out of reach.
Gamez led all scorers with 28 points. He was 9 for 13 from the field, including 6 for 9 on three-pointers and added five rebounds and four assists.
Dezmond Gilleylen scored 22 points off the bench, 17 of those coming in the critical second half. Derian Williams tallied 20 points. Robert Williams scored 15 and had five rebounds and four assists.
ACC shot a sizzling 42% from behind the three-point arc on 15 for 36 shooting.
The Lumberjacks (1-1) play in the annual alumni game at home next Saturday, Nov. 9 and have their open regular season opener the following week, Nov. 16 against Community Christian College.
